The shading is an envelope, not a service area. Each polygon is the convex hull around that mode's reachable points, so it fills in water and open country that has no service at all. The dots are the real answer.
Times are peak, terminal to terminal. Off-peak trains run slower, Lincoln Tunnel buses are far worse in the evening than the morning, and none of these figures include the walk from your front door to the platform or the last leg from Penn, Grand Central, or Port Authority to 34th Street.
Ferries and buses carry extra risk. Seastreak runs a handful of departures a day and cancels in heavy weather. Many bus points are park-and-ride lots with permit waitlists, not walkable town centers.
Past about 75 minutes you are looking at a different kind of life. Poughkeepsie to Grand Central runs close to an hour and three quarters each way.
